Microfinance in Guatemala: a Kiva project

http://www.uncorneredmarket.com/2009/08/microfinance-panoramas-from-guatemala/#more-2099

Check out this neat couple that is traveling all over the world. They spent some time in Guatemala and took photos of two KIVA.org financed projects.

Do you support any KIVA projects in any part of the world? For $25, you can be part of a team of folks who provide a loan to an entrepreneur in one of many countries around the world. Fascinating.

Student Helps Build Computer Lab for Honduran Children

It might be interesting to discuss this project... I am curious about how they will maintain the computer lab in a place that is politically unstable and may not have a consistent electrical supply.

Summer Reading

Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder is a Pulitzer Prize winner- and with good reason. The chronicle of the work of Dr. Paul Farmer in Haiti is fascinating- I highly recommend it.

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen is another good read, although a bit slow in the early part of the book. Greg's work building schools in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan is inspiring.

If you know anyone who has a hankering to "go and do good" by helping in the construction of a home for a week or more in Guatemala, then From Houses to Homes is a place to start. And it was founded by a Jersey Boy, Joe Collins. Joe spends much of his time in Guatemala and returns to the States… Continue

Partnership Announced to Parish

Thank you to the Partnership friends who introduced the St. Bernard Guatemala Partnership to the parish this weekend: Mike Wojcik, Annemarie Mattia, Deb Cummins, and Carmen Chavarria.

We had some engaging conversations in the Narthex with parishoners and look forward to building on this foundation as the Holy Spirit leads us.
